Artificial Intelligence has been the talk of the decade and because of that, there are experts who have rendered it a major threat to human’s existence while other experts are considering it the dawn of a new evolution age. Are the experts wrong to render it a threat? And is it actually the dawn of a new Age?

“It will be the best thing that’s ever happened to us or it will be the worst. If we’re not careful, it very well maybe the last thing” -Stephen Hawking

A visualization of AI to human environment

Human interaction with AI

AI as a threat.

The use of AI in the workplaces is expected to eliminate, if not reduce, a great number of jobs. Since the early ages of technology, human beings have increased the number of job opportunities. The most common jobs being on data entry and data analysis, writing reports and meeting targets. AI has given the machines the ability to do this same repetitive tasks perfectly and at a greater speed than humans. An organization will opt to hire AI machines, commonly referred to as bots, to do the jobs as opposed to employing 20 workers. This will cause a major disruption for people who will lose the jobs to the bots

AI applications are being integrated into the human body and as a result, could pose a catastrophic threat to the user as they are prone to being misused, being poorly designed and maintained. This will make the public have a negative perception towards AI.

AI as a treat.

Firstly, the implementation of AI to work in environments will allow workers to focus on jobs that are of high value as compared to the repetitive ones which could be boring and obsolete. Organizations will prioritize jobs that cannot be done by the bots, such as Customer Relation and Quality assurance.

Secondly, AI has had a positive impact in the health care system. The number of lives that haveĀ  been saved and improved as a result of AI applications has been tremendous. An example of such an application is H2O.ai, which has been used to predict ICU transfers. The application has minimized the tension in hospitals during emergencies and has improved the workflow in hospital.

Thirdly, it has improved the architecture of buildings and roads. The roads and buildings are getting better and better each day. The roads have been visualized and AI can predict how to avoid large traffics.

Conclusion

AI is still in its new stages of development and more people should give it the benefit of the doubt because of what it has proved so far. It has posed more treats than threats at its early stages and that is an indication that we are headed in the right direction. AI will be the end of the fourth age-contemporary age- and the dawn of a new age.
